Art and Disability Awards Ireland Scheme

Awarded by Arts and Disability Forum.
Annual.
Awards of £5,000.
Limited to deaf and disabled artists – any art form.
The scheme’s purpose is to identify, encourage and nurture individual talent among disabled practitioners.

Artes Mundi Prize

Awarded by Artes Mundi.
Biennially – even-numbered years.
Top prize of £40,000, with runners-up awarded £4,000. The work of short-listed artists is displayed as part of the Artes Mundi exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff.
Open to any artist of any age and nationality whose work explores the human condition.
Focus on international contemporary visual artists who engage with social reality and lived experience.
Open call for nominations artists via an online form. Artists can be nominated more than once across successive cycles. Two selectors then determine a shortlist of 5–7 artists for exhibition. Prizewinner is selected by a larger panel of eminent judges that does not include the original selectors.

Arts Council of England

Awarded by Arts Council of England, Grants for the Arts.
Open applications throughout the year.
Total amount awarded to visual artists in 2010 was £2,836,152. Average grant awarded was £6,099.
The artist’s activity must take place mainly in England. There are some exceptions to this, when artists from England are involved in activities in other countries.
Artistic quality is assessed by looking at three factors: the idea (the concept or artistic impetus behind the work), the practice (the effectiveness of how the work is put into practice and the impact it has on those experiencing it) and the development (the contribution the work makes to the development of the artists, the art form and the arts more widely).
Grants for the Arts are for activities carried out over a set period and which engage people in England in arts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out their work.

Arts Council of Ireland Bursary Award

Awarded by Arts Council of Ireland.
Up to two deadlines per year. In some art forms/practices, there is only one deadline.
Awards of up to €15,000 are available. In a limited number of cases, applications for multi-annual bursaries are considered.
The award is open to professional artists. Applicants must be born in or resident in the Republic of Ireland.
The purpose of the award is to support professional artists to develop their practice. The award provides artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect and engage with their art practice.

Individual applicants must have been born in, or be resident in, the Republic of Ireland.
There are two strands to this award: Travel and Training Outbound to support individuals who wish to avail of training and other professional development opportunities abroad; and Travel and Training Inbound to support individuals or organisations who wish to invite specialists from abroad to deliver high-level training or mentoring.

Arts Council of Wales

Awarded by Arts Council of Wales and Creative Wales Awards.
Open grants are available to any type of artist and fall into three categories: small project awards of £250–£5,000; mainline production awards of £5,001–£20,000; small training grants of £250 to £2,000.
Applicants should live in Wales and the proposed project should happen in Wales.
Arts Council of Wales believes ‘in the power of the arts to transform people’s lives, and to change communities; that everybody in Wales should have access to quality arts experiences and have the opportunity to take part in and enjoy the arts; that artists need to be supported to develop their talents, and should have the opportunity to develop their careers’.

Baloise Art Prize

Awarded by Baloise and Art Basel International Art Fair.
Annual – winners are announced at Art Basel fair.
Two top prizes of CHF 30,000 (£20,036). Prize includes the acquisition by Baloise of a selection of works by the award winner. These are subsequently donated to the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna.
Eligibility limited to ‘emerging artists’, but candidates can be of any nationality.
Outlook of the award tied up with that of the corporate founder: ‘Baloise believes that the privilege of owning art brings with it the obligation to present it to a wider public.’

BP Portrait Award

Awarded by National Portrait Gallery.

Cnuas Stipends

Administered and funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
Only available to members of Aosdana. A member may apply for a Cnuas at any time.
The Cnuas is a stipend that is available to Aosdana members under certain conditions. It is provided by the Arts Council to assist Aosdana members to concentrate their time and energies on the full time pursuit of their art. A Cnuas is granted for a five-year term. In 2011, the value of the Cnuas was €17,180 per annum.
Only members of the Aosdana artistic community can apply for a Cnuas. Membership of Aosdana is limited to 250 individuals. In order to be eligible to receive the stipend, the earnings of the applicant cannot be in excess of one-and-a-half times the value of a Cnuas. Membership of Aosdana is by peer election and candidates must be Irish/Northern Irish or have been resident in the Republic of Ireland/ Northern Ireland for five years. They must have produced a distinguished body of work.
The purpose of the Cnuas is to allow artists to immerse themselves fully in their work.
Eligibility is based primarily on financial need, as set out above.

Creative Scotland (formerly Scottish Arts Council)

Awarded by Creative Scotland.
An innovation fund of £5m will be awarded in a variety of a categories.
Supports Scottish artists and practitioners.
The Vital Spark awards will reward experimentation, radical new work and innovative approaches to engaging with audiences. The Highland Arts Programme will invest £300,000 invested in music, dance, literature, drama, crafts and visual arts development in the Highlands. A Rural Innovation Fund will support creative individuals and micro enterprises in rural areas to develop their business skills and networks, and test new ways of reaching new markets.

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize

Awarded by The Photographers’ Gallery.
Annual.
First prize of £30,000, and £3,000 for the three runners-up, with an exhibition at the Photographer’s Gallery for all four shortlisted candidates.
Artists can be of any nationality and are nominated on the basis of a previous exhibition/publication within Europe.
Rewards artists who have made a ‘significant contribution’ to the medium of photography in Europe over the previous year.
Candidates are nominated by an independent academy of experts and are subsequently judged by a jury of four.

EAC Over-60s Art Awards

Awarded by Elderly Accomodation Counsel.
Annual.
Nine prizes of up to £250 across categories such as still life, watercolour, drawing and photography. The work of around 100 finalists has been displayed in full-scale exhibitions at varying locations. The format for 2012 has not yet been determined.
Eligibility limited to amateur artists – those who have not made their living mainly through the sale or display of work.
Aims to celebrate the creativity of older amateur artists.

East International Award

Awarded by East International and Contemporary Art Norwich.
Exhibition is held at Norwich University College of the Arts.
Top prize of £5,000.
Exhibition and award is run on an ad hoc basis. There were cycles in 2006, 2007 and 2009, with another planned for 2012.
There are no restrictions on eligibility.
Aims to ‘…define the arrival of a new generation of artists with new attitudes towards making art’.
An open submission policy. In 2009, the two selectors looked at 11,000 images to select 25 artists for exhibition and the ultimate prizewinner.

Elephant Trust Grants

Awarded by The Elephant Trust.
Trustees meet four times a year to consider applications, as advertised on website.
Grants of up to £2,000.
Awards are available to UK artists for new, innovative visual projects. Small organisations and galleries are also eligible.
Aims to make it possible for artists to undertake and complete projects when confronted by lack of funds.

European Association for Jewish Culture Visual Arts Grants

Awarded by European Association for Jewish Culture.
Annual.
Grants of up to €5,000 for new exhibitions of contemporary art that address the Jewish experience. Awards are made in two instalments. The project must be exhibited within 12 months of the first instalment.
Applicants must be resident in Europe. They must have two years of arts experience and must have exhibited their work at least once previously.
Focus of the European Association for Jewish Culture is to enhance Jewish life by fostering and supporting artistic creativity and achievement.

FIRST@108 Public Art Award

Awarded by Royal British Society of Sculptors.
Award previously offered in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Five shortlisted artists receive £500 to develop their proposals for exhibition at the RBS Galleries and presentation to a panel of art industry professionals. The winner receives a further £10,000 to create their proposal for public exhibition. The winning work is exhibited initially at the RBS galleries with an accompanying solo show in the Salon Gallery. The award catalogue includes a profile of all five shortlisted artists and a foreword by a respected curator or art critic.
The award is open to sculptors of any nationality, working in any medium. The only restriction is that artists must not previously have received a public commission worth more than £10,000.
The award supports innovation and excellence in public art by offering valuable professional development opportunities that enable sculptors to break into the field.

Flamin Productions

Two to five awards between £20,000–£50,000. Development bursary of £1,000 and access to professional expertise for shortlisted applications.
No age limit, but artists must have a London address. They must also have previously exhibited at festivals, cinemas or galleries.
Focus on supporting experimental works that represent a significant step forward in the work of the artist.

Hugo Boss Prize

Awarded by Guggenheim Foundation, Solomon R Guggenheim Museum.
Biennial.
Award of $100,000.
No age, gender, nationality or media restrictions on eligibility.
Nominations include emerging artists as well as distinguished professionals who are due recognition.
Focus on rewarding work that represents a significant development in contemporary art. Hugo Boss sees the prize as ‘…underlining our commitment to the arts as an integral part of our corporate culture’.
A jury of curators, critics and scholars nominates six or seven artists for the shortlist and subsequently chooses the prizewinner.

ING Discerning Eye

Awarded by Discerning Eye, ING and Parker Harris (organizers of annual exhibition).
Annual.
Sponsor’s prize of £5,000 and Founder’s prize of £2,500. Various other monetary awards down to £250, along with a Drawing Bursary of £1,000. A key reward for this scheme is the exhibition of work in the Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries.
Open to all British artists or those resident in the UK.
The programme is advertised as providing a unique opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside those by internationally known names.
Combination of invited artists and open submission of works. Six selectors – two artists, two collectors, two critics – curate their own separate exhibitions, taking a minimum of 25% of their final selection from the pool of submitted works.

International Print Biennale

Awarded by Northern Print.
Biennial – the inaugural cycle was in 2009 and plans are in place for 2011.
Top prize of £5,000. The scheme also hosts an open exhibition that takes place across multiple venues in Newcastle and Gateshead.
Eligibility is a loose interpretation of ‘…all artists whose work encounters print’. Since this is an international award, there is no restriction on applicant nationality.
Focus of the award is to encourage, recognise and reward artists making prints.
Selection for the exhibition and subsequent prizes is managed by a panel of three, which is comprised of a curator, artist and master printer. Selectors are also each permitted to invite one artist to display work.

One award of £10,000 and a broadcast commission from Channel 4, worth £20,000.

Jerwood Painting Fellowships

Dates for the next Jerwood Painting Fellowships will be announced in 2011/12.
£10,000 bursary and a six-month period of professional development support.

John Moores Painting Prize 2010

Awarded by National Museums Liverpool/Walker Art Gallery/John Moores Liverpool Exhibition Trust.
Biannually – to coincide with the Liverpool Biennial.
First prize of £25,000 with four other prizes of £2,500. In addition, the winner of the popular ‘Visitor’s Choice’ prize will win £2,012 (in 2012). Exhibition at Walker Art Gallery for selected works.
Artists must live or be professionally based within the UK. Candidates are judged on a particular piece.
Marketed as the UK’s biggest painting prize.
Open submissions shortlisted by a jury. Works must then be submitted through six depots across the UK and are brought to Liverpool for judging. Paintings worthy for exhibition and prizes are then selected.

Jolomo Awards

Awarded by The Jolomo Foundation.
Biennial.
Winning award of £25,000 with an additional £10,000 divided amongst the second and third award winners.
Open to all emerging artists over 18 years of age committed to painting the Scottish landscape. Applicants must be painters living and working in Scotland. They can be students or recent graduates of art school. If more than five years has passed since graduation, the body of work submitted must be approved by a qualified referee – for instance, a gallery owner. ‘Artists can emerge at any age.’
Open application policy via written form and virtual submission of work. Thereafter, shortlisted candidates are interviewed by the judging panel at the same time as the submission of their original works. Jury of six for 2011 includes a journalist, a gallery director and an artist.

Latitude Contemporary Art Prize

Awarded by Festival Republic.
Annual.
£10,000 to include production costs for artwork to be presented at following year’s festival.
The prize is awarded to one of five artists who are commissioned to present original artwork at the Latitude Festival each year.
There are no eligibility restrictions regarding artists who submit applications to be considered although, for production considerations, UK-based artists are preferred.
The LCA prize is intended to challenge artists’ capacity to make site-specific, temporary and original work to sit within the unique context of Festival Republic’s multi award winning Music and Arts Festival, Latitude.
The Latitude Contemporary Art exhibition is located in the festival’s ‘Iris Gallery’ sited within its own woodland arena and all artists work needs to be suited to this open-air environment.

Les Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award

Awarded by Les Rencontres d’Arles with the support of the Luma Foundation.
Annual, since 2002.
First prize of €25,000. Winner is chosen from a group of 15 exhibitions featuring the work of 15 nominated photographers and artists. There are two additional prizes: The Contemporary Book Award and The Historical Book Award, worth €8,000 each for the best photo books published during the previous year. (Open call given in April each year.)
Candidates can be of any age and any nationality and are predominantly artists whose ‘…work has been recently discovered internationally or deserves to be’.
Focus on photographers or artists making use of photography.
Five experts from different photographic fields nominate three artists each to exhibit their work as candidates for the Discovery Award. The winner is chosen by a vote of professionals present during the first week of the exhibition.

Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize

Awarded by Lynn Foundation and Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers.
Annual.
First prize of £15,000, five runner-up prizes of £1,500, young artist award of £2,500. Complemented by an exhibition at The Mall Galleries, London, SW1 featuring a wider range of paintings from the field of submissions.
Open to all UK artists.
The purpose of the prize is to encourage creative representational painting.
In 2009, there were 800 open submissions from which 82 were shortlisted for prizes and the exhibition.

Mark Tanner Sculpture Award

Awarded by Standpoint Gallery and the Mark Tanner Charitable Trust.
Annual. There will be no cycle in 2011, as the award is re-launching nationally in 2012.
MTSA intends to support the creative work of the recipient over one year. £6,000 goes direct to the artist towards the production of new work; a further £4,000 helps to fund and promote the prizewinner’s solo exhibition at Standpoint Gallery.
Candidates must live and work within the Greater London area. There is no age limit – ‘…we seek to give the award to an artist who demonstrates the development of a mature practice, but to whom the prize would make a considerable difference’. Candidates must have graduated at least one year previously from formal art education.
MTSA is aimed at emerging/mid-career sculptors making outstanding work within contemporary fine art practice. The award is particularly interested in work that demonstrates a commitment to process and material.
Shortlisting by written application and digital submission of work via a panel including two guest selectors. Final selection through presentation and interview at Standpoint.

Northern Art Prize

Awarded by Logistik, Leeds County Council, Arup, Mint Hotel, Marketing Leeds.
Annual.
Top prize of £16,500 with three runners-up receiving £1,500 each. The work of each of the four artists in the final shortlist is exhibited at Leeds Art Gallery.
Artists may work in any field and be of any age. They must live in the north of England.
Focus of the award is to reward the best creative talent in the region.
Nominators – arts professionals from across the north – choose two artists each to go forward to a smaller selection panel. The panel selects four artists for the final shortlist whose work is exhibited. After viewing the exhibition, judges choose the first-prize winner.

Pollock-Krasner Grants

Awarded by The Pollock-Krasner Foundation (USA).
No deadlines – rolling application programme.
Grants of varying amounts. In 2009/10, the scheme awarded $2,547,000 to 162 artists. This works out as an average of £9,815 per artist.
Eligibility limited to painters, sculptors and artists who work on paper. Applications encouraged from candidates who have a genuine financial need. Applications from all nationalities are welcomed.
Mission of the grants is to aid those individuals who have been working as professionals for a significant period of time.
Foundation staff are assisted with selection by a dedicated committee. Artists submit examples of their work and previous exhibition history is taken into account. Applications are promptly considered.

RA Summer Exhibition

Awarded by Royal Academy of Arts.

Roswitha Haftmann Prize

Awarded by Roswitha Haftmann Foundation.
Frequency is irregular, although the prize has been granted annually in recent times. In theory, there is a cycle every one to three years.
Award of CHF 150,000 (£101,671).
Prizewinners chosen on the basis of their artistic significance, without regard for age, nationality or gender.
Aim of the award is to recognise outstanding achievement in visual arts.

RSW Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award and RSW Council Award

Awarded by Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
Annual.
£3,000 for the Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award and £2,500 for the RSW Council Award. Both award winners are chosen from entries to the annual exhibition held in Edinburgh. The former prize is for the best outdoor scene and the latter is given for the ‘…most outstanding work’.
RSW members and their guests are eligible to enter the exhibition. The work of non- members is selected from an open submission.
The exhibition is intended to be a celebration of water-based painting.

St Hugh’s Arts Awards

Awarded by The St Hugh’s Foundation.
Annual.
Award between £12,000–£15,000, depending on the scale and scope of the successful proposal. Additional advice and mentoring from one of the organisation’s trustees.
Applicants must be resident and regularly working in Lincolnshire, Yorkshire East Riding or the City of Hull. Projects considered in any art form.
‘The Foundation aims to help established arts practitioners and producers to develop their professional careers in the arts, and in doing so, to contribute their own knowledge and experience to the wider growth and dissemination of arts practice in the region.’

Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize

Awarded by Taylor Wessing and National Portrait Gallery.
Annual.
First prize of £12,000, second prize £3,000, third prize £2,000, fourth prize £1,000. National Portrait Gallery exhibition of the work of 60 artists. Elle magazine commission for the winner.
Any photographer of any nationality may enter, as long as they are over 18. In 2009/2010, 2,500 photographers submitted more than 6,700 pieces. Each artist can submit up to six photographs.
Aims to ‘…showcase the work of the most talented emerging young photographers, photography students and gifted amateurs alongside that of established professionals’.
A panel of six whittles down the entries to 60 for the exhibition. The prizewinners are then chosen.

The Arts Foundation Awards/Fellowships

Awarded by The Arts Foundation.
Annual.
Up to six £10,000 awards, each for a practitioner of a different art form. Categories rotate each year. In 2012, the categories are animation, choreography, opera composition, poetry and product design. There is an additional Yoma Sasburg Fellowship awarded annually for sculpture.
Eligibility limited to artists living and working in the UK. The award is given to emerging artists who have achieved some professional standing. Selection based on both talent and need.
Aims to provide artists with stability to explore new forms at a critical stage and to facilitate cross-art form networking.

The Catlin Art Prize

Limited eligibility. The Catlin Art Prize is an award and exhibition showcasing artists selected from The Catlin Guide. This is an introduction to 40 of the most promising new graduate artists in the UK.
Focus on providing artists with support to develop their practice and to produce a brand new and site-specific body of work.
The Catlin Guide is drawn up on the recommendation of BA and MA course leaders, gallery directors and curators. Around 500 entrants are initially selected and these are whittled down according to the potential of the candidates to make a significant mark on the art world during the next decade. A panel of judges selects the ultimate prizewinner on the same basis.

The Gilchrist-Fisher Award

Eligibility limited to landscape artists under the age of 30.
Award deals with all aspects of landscape art.

The Jameel Prize

Awarded by Victoria and Albert Museum
Biannual.
A single prize of £25,000 is awarded to the winner at a prize-giving ceremony.
Entry is by nomination only. Nominations are invited from a wide range of specialists with a knowledge of contemporary art and design inspired by the Islamic tradition. More than 200 artists are put forward in this way.
The prize is truly international. It is not restricted to entrants who are Muslim or from the Islamic world, but is open to designers for any nationality, creed or age.
The aim of the award is to ‘…explore the relationship between Islamic traditions of art, craft and design and contemporary work as part of a wider debate about Islamic culture and its role today’.
The shortlisted artists and designers are invited to show examples of their work in a special exhibition at the V&A.

The Leverhulme Trust Arts Training Bursaries

Awarded by The Leverhulme Trust.
Annual applications cycle.
Candidates can apply for any amount over a maximum of three years in the first instance. Bursaries vary in size, according to individual circumstances.
These are bursaries for ‘…highly talented students who are receiving training in the fine and performing arts’. Awards are normally made at undergraduate or postgraduate level and candidates are put forward by UK arts training organizations, (primarily those that can demonstrate a world-class reputation). Applications from universities are not accepted.
Scheme is intended to provide support for maintenance, training and professional development.

Threadneedle Prize for Painting and Sculpture

Awarded by Mall Galleries.
Annual.
Top award is Threadneedle Prize at £25,000, with each of the six runners-up receiving £1,000. All works featured in the exhibition at the Mall Galleries are eligible to win the £10,000 ‘Visitors’ Choice’ award. One artist can win both the main prize and the Visitors’ Choice award, making it the most valuable prize for a single work of art in the UK.
Artists of all nationalities, aged 18 or over, are eligible but they must live or work in the UK or Ireland. Candidates may submit up to three recently created works that have not been exhibited for another prize or award.
Marketed as ‘…the UK’s leading showcase for paintings and sculptures that promote the practice of representational art, but challenge its language and assumptions’.
In the first instance, a panel of three selects 50–70 pieces worthy of exhibition. From these, a shortlist of seven is drawn up to select prizewinners from.

Turner Prize

£25,000 for the winner and £5,000 for each of the other nominees. Shortlisted artists present works in a show normally held at Tate Britain before the winner is chosen.

High-profile prize to celebrate new developments in contemporary art.
Nominations are invited each year and are judged by a rotating independent jury. Members of the jury in 2010 were: Katrina Brown, Vasif Kortun, Nadia Schneider, Godfrey Worsdale.

Wellcome Trust Arts Awards

Awarded by Wellcome Trust.
Several awards each year.
Two types of award. Up to £30,000 for small projects – delivery of small-scale productions, investigation of new methods, development of new collaborations. Over £30,000 for large projects – significant productions that will have high levels of impact.
Applicants must live and work in the UK or Republic of Ireland and are usually affiliated to third-party organisations (e.g. galleries). Collaborative projects are welcomed. Projects should involve the creation of new artistic work and must have some biomedical scientific input.
Scheme aims to stimulate interest, excitement and debate about biomedical science through the arts.
Slightly different application process for small and large projects. The former requires a written form that is assessed on merit and need by a funding committee. Initial applications for large grants are assessed by the Arts Awards Advisory Panel, which then invites successful applicants to develop a full proposal.
